Session 1: Are You Serious?! Why Would I Want to Attend a Seminar on DEATH?
This lighthearted introduction to the series will provide you with all the reasons why you should plan to attend the remaining life transition education sessions.
Session 2: Palliative Care / Hospice Care: What is it? What is the Difference?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2020), only 4 of 10 Americans will die instantly; the remaining 6 out of 10 will die a slow, debilitating death as a result of a chronic health condition. Do you know your options for end-of-life care?
Session 3: Advanced Directives, Part I: Who is Going to Speak for You When You Cannot Speak for Yourself? The Need for Advanced Directives
You may have an idea about how you want to live out your final days, but do you know the process for making your wishes known? In Advanced Directives, Part I, the concepts of advanced directives and naming a health care agent are introduced. The pros and cons of advanced directives will be discussed as well as what powers advanced directives can and cannot offer the individual.
Session 4: Advanced Directives, Part II: Identifying Our Needs When We Cannot Speak for Ourselves - Writing Out Our Advanced Directives
There is a known saying, “If it's not documented, it didn't happen." The Advanced Directives for Health Care Decisions and the Physician's Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) forms will be presented and discussed, and their differences explained. Each participant will receive a free copy of their state's Advanced Directives for Health Care Decisions and POLST for their use.
Session 5: Ask a Mortician! It's not presumptuous to write that most people don’t really have a conversation with a mortician/funeral director until they need to: at that point, the discussion is filled with emotion. Let's have a conversation…maybe it is about pricing, maybe it’s about funeral options, maybe it’s a question about the most difficult case you have to deal with (either from a family standpoint or from a corpse being difficult to prepare).
Session 6: YOUR FUNERAL. Let’s Plan It. WHY? So Your Loved Ones Will Not Be Arguing Over What They THINK You Would Want
We plan and prepare for most events that we deem important, yet few of us prepare our loved ones with instructions on what to do when we die. Making final arrangements can be overwhelming for those close to you. Clear choices may be difficult to make. When the death of a loved one occurs, there are many decisions that will have to be made in a very short period of time.
In this session, Dr. Oliver presents a comprehensive document, "Final Wishes." This document identifies your wishes, from the information needed to correctly write your obituary to your desired post-service event. Each participant will receive a free copy of "Final Wishes" for their use.
Consisting of 6-1-hour sessions, the goal of the life transitions series is to inform the participant on end of life issues and opportunities, as well as prepare the participant to take concrete steps toward releasing the burden surrounding end of life decision making for their loved ones. This series is presented by Life Transition Educator, Lisa C. Oliver, EdD.
